Weekend Review – Alaska

I realize that toady is not Monday – but it kind of feels like it is to me. I just got back from a one week cruise to Alaska yesterday!!
Last weekend we flew to Vancouver where we boarded the Norwegian Sun cruise ship. It is a slightly smaller ship as those big ships go, but there were still around 3000 people with the staff and the vacationers. I wasn’t worried about being sea sick because it was so big, so that is a good thing.July 15-3, 2015
Our first day on board was a sea day through the inside passage from Vancouver en route to Ketchikan. It had been quite foggy, so our Capitan decided to go through the “inside, inside, passage”, and we found sun. We saw great mountains and were able to also do some whale watching. I got a few great pictures of humpback whales jumping in the wake of the ship.
On our first day in Ketchikan we took a kayaking tour. It was definitely overpriced, but it was nice to be able to get away from the cruise people and the crowds to see a bit of the more remote areas of the island. When we were in Juneau, we rented bikes from a local company and made up our own tour. We cycled July 15-2, 2015about 55km or so to go visit the Mendenhall glacier and around the city a bit. It was a great ride. On our last stop, in Skagway, we hiked up to Upper Dewy Lake where we gained 3100 feet in elevation over only 4.7km! However, the views at the top were fantastic!
Our last day was in Seward, where we passed the day in an icecream shop playing endless games of crib because it was absolutely pouring outside!! Then, right as it cleared up, we took a train from Seward to Anchorage. It was a phenomenal train ride. We had spectacular views of lakes, rivers, mountains, and glaciers. It was a great end to the trip.
We had such a great time on our holiday. We ate lots of food too – that is the point of being on a cruise, isn’t it? As well, we met some interesting people. I think I was even able to relax a bit, which is always impressive.July 15-1, 2015
